About The Survivor:

The show leaves a bunch of people in an isolated location, where they have to strive hard to provide themselves with food, water, fire, and shelter. There are various challenges and competitions in the way which they compete to get rewards and immunity from elimination. As the show proceeds the candidates are eliminated with each passing week. The fellow contestants vote against one to eliminate him and towards the end only one remains on the show and is given the title of “Sole Survivor” and is awarded the grand prize of US$1,000,000.

Originally the idea was introduced by Charlie Parsons in 1994 under the name Castaway. Parsons then went to Sweden and was able to find a broadcaster there for the show, ultimately producing Expedition Robinson in 1997. The show was a success, and plans for international versions were made.

The show has 16 players divided in two tribes. Both the tribes are deported to isolated locations where they have to stay for 39 days without basic necessities of life. The two teams compete against each other for food, immunity and eliminate each other based on the voting system.

When half players are out of the game the remaining players are merged into one team only and then they compete on one on one basis. Once down to two or three people, a final Tribal Council is held where the remaining players plead their case to the jury members. The jury then votes for which player should be considered the “Sole Survivor” and win the show’s grand prize.

The name behind the success of the show in USA is Mark Burnett. He transformed the game a bit and retooled the Swedish concept which was a bit crude and made it more dramatic by focusing on human psychology and their reactions to these situations.

Each season lasts for around 13 to 16 episodes. In the first American season, there was a 75-person crew. By season 22, the strength of the crew grew to 325 people.

All together a total of 498 contestants that have competed on Survivor’s 33 seasons till now.

The American version has been very successful. From 2000 to 2006, 33 series has been broadcasted of the show and it was ranked among the top ten most viewed shows. It has consistently been one of the top 20 most watched shows through its first 18 seasons and from seasons 21 to 23.

The series has been nominated for several Emmy Awards and has won several related titles.  Jeff Probst won the award for an Outstanding Host four consecutive times after the award was introduced in 2008. In 2007, the series was included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 greatest TV shows of all-time.

The series was renewed for a 34th season, Survivor: Game Changers, which will premiere on March 8, 2017
